| figure 8 - elliott smith (vinyl) |
this is my favorite album of all time! i have it not only on vinyl but ALSO on cd. i was originally introduced to elliott smith about 5 years ago now and he's been my favorite musician since i first heard his music in good will hunting. i think what i love most about this album is that some songs are great for certain times, like son of sam is definitely more upbeat than some of elliott other music. but other songs fit a more melancholy sound, like bye. i think that album is just so spectacular and i can listen to it any time of day and any time of year.

come on feel the illinoise! - sufjan stevens
|
the second album i'm gonna talk a little bit about is sufjan steven's album come on feel the illinoise! i'd say this is maybe my second favorite album of all time. this is a great summer/spring album, and it always just makes me so happy whenever it comes on or whenever i put it on my turntable. i was first introduced to sufjan through a close friend of mine, and some of his music actually gets some influence from elliott. i'd say that this album is definitely much different than elliott's indie, acoustic, melancholy sound but i still love it for its beautiful instrumentals as well as stunning vocals.

| pink moon - nick drake |
next is nick drake's album pink moon. i love this album so much, its such a beautiful compilation of songs and it definitely has a lot of similarities to elliott's sound as well. nick drake was actually one of elliott's biggest influences. this album is perfect for the chillier months, and i usually end up listening to it soo much during the fall.

| night and day - joe jackson |
this album was ingrained in my head as the "driving album" when i was younger because of how much my family listened to it when we would go on long drives. even when i listen to it today i still tend to think about traveling, and sitting looking out of the window into the trees that seemed to be flying by in a green-brown blur. not only that, though, this album is once of my favorite albums to dance to. i saw joe jackson live a couple years back and it was so much fun!! i will always love this album, and it will never fail to make me dance a little in my seat.

the la's - the la's
|
this album, no matter when i listen to it, will remind me of when i was a little kid and dancing to "there she goes" in my high chair. da would always turn this song up to the top volume and i could feel the floor vibrating from how loud the speakers were. i love this album, and it always reminds me of my dad when i listen to it. really fun britpop album with some awesome songs in it.
i love collecting records and cds because of the physical aspect of it. i think these albums are even more special to me now because i actually have them, as well as the great memories i have associated with them too. i also associate who gave me the vinyl with that album when i listen to it. not only this, but i sometimes get vinyl's or cd's as a way to remember a trip so sometimes when i listen to those, i think about the places i've been. i love my little collection that i have right now, and i'm very excited to continue collecting them!
